A proud moment awaits VKV, Arunachal

ITANAGAR, Sept 4: Come Teachers’ Day, a National award for outstanding contribution in the field of education awaits Karnam Prahlada Rao from Bellary, Karnataka. The award will be given in a glittering ceremony by the President of India, Pratibha Devi Patil in New Delhi. Surprisingly the award is in recognition of his silent and dedicated work for over 30 years not in Karnataka but in the remote Himalayan tribal State of Arunachal Pradesh.

In the late seventies even in the metros of the country, not many might have heard of NEFA. But not Prahalada Rao. Born in 1951 in the remote Kalapura Village, Bellary District in Karnataka, Prahlada Rao completed his graduation in Arts and Bachelor of Education. Barely was in his late twenties, when a call came from Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu) for service in the NEFA. He left home without a second thought, though there were many opportunities knocking at his door in the home state itself.Travelling over 3000 km to that un-known, climatically hostile, linguistically and culturally different terrain, Prahlada Rao as a Primary Teacher, plunged into the “Man Making and Nation Building” educational activities of Vivekananda Kendra in the year 1977. Since then, it has been a relentless struggle against all odds, to bring the light of education to the tribal children there who in those days belonged to the first generation learners. Not limiting him within the four walls of class rooms, the fire of service in his belly prompted Rao take up community development work like cleanliness Campaigns, health camps, adult education classes also, thus endearing to the community and leaving a mark wherever he worked. Now for over three decades, Rao has been part of the triumphs and tribulations of that remote Himalayan State. Thanks to the efforts of people like him in Vivekananda Kendra, Arunachal Pradesh slowly took strides in development.

Recognizing his unique contribution, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh had given him the “Best Teacher Award” in the year 2000 itself. The present National Award is a grateful Nation’s recognition for his silent nation building work being carried out in a strategically very significant part of the country, which the neighboring China even now claims as its part!.

Now, in his late fifties, Rao is the Principal of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Yazali, a Senior Secondary English Medium School in Lower Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh.

A proud moment indeed for Vivekananda Kendra kanyakumari, Vivekananda Kendra Arunachal Pradesh Trust.

Sangma is day dreaming: APCC

ITANAGAR, Sept 4: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee reacting to the press statement of General Secretary, NCP P.A. Sangma, said that the statement are self mocking, shameful and hollow and amounts to day dreaming.

Claims of NCP to play crucial role in formation of next state government and allotment of tickets to those who fail to get tickets in other parties is self contradictory. How one count chicks before it is hatched, APCC asked?

Sangma had yesterday said that Congress is a divided house with many chief ministerial candidates and that NCP would give tickets to those rejected by other parties.

The Arunachal Pradesh witnessed unprecedented, multi faceted development in almost all sectors under the leadership of Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu with support of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the party claimed.

Sangma's claim of anti-incumbency factor in the state is contradictory and baseless and aimed at gaining cheap political mileage. APCC, President Nabam Tuki made it clear that there is no dispute regarding Chief Minister ship and Dorjee Khandu would continue to lead the government, the party said while adding that Sangma's statement does not suit his stature as a leader.

Changing role of teachers and quality education in Arunachal

Dekio Gumja

Quality education is solution to all the problems. Teachers are the main ingredient in respect of giving education to the society. They are the one who teach the ways of life, channelise youth power and mould their character. Teachers are the “backbone of the nation”. Since ancient period its significance and role have always been respected. However, time and situation have affected its status and role.

Arunachal Pradesh is among the least literate state of India with literacy rate of 54.76%. Though the rate is dismal, hard work put in by teachers, if not all of them cannot be undermined.

Many dedicated and brilliant school teachers are serving in various schools of the state. They limit their lives in the remote isolated village having no road connectivity and short of all modern amenities. Because of these teachers, our society survives and is progressing.

However, we can’t deny the fact that with passing of time such dedicated, determined and sincere teachers are diminishing. Worst features of dilution of quality teachers are that many of school teachers in our state don’t know even their posting place and drawing their salary residing at capital complex. Many are unable to speak and write single correct English sentences whereas our official as well as medium of study is English. Many do not mind smoking and drinking in the open market. Imagine that they are guiding and teaching our beloved children which is the future of nation. One who does not adhere to morality, what kind of moral will they teach. Until and unless one who teaches is a man and a woman of character, quality education can’t prevail.

The regularization of the officiating teachers without formal interview and bureaucratic political nexus and highhandedness in SSA teachers recruitment process on many occasion are highly responsible for dilution of quality teachers in Arunachal Pradesh. In many occasions, students with sound academic record, disciplined and sincere do not find their names in the merit list due to interference by bureaucrats and political leaders.

Who is the loser? Definitely, common masses of society. The knowledge which the sincere boy and the girl wanted to disseminate as teachers couldn’t be availed by the society.

Common masses are the worst sufferer because of lack of quality teachers. It is because all the quantified teachers are posted in the government schools mostly in rural areas. Those who are responsible for dilution of quality teachers seldom bother about it because their children are studying at costly private schools. But poor guardian unable to send their children to the private schools suffers the most.

Except in few government schools, syllabus in all government schools are seldom completed. But unlike ST/SC or OBC reservation policy there is no provision for students of such rural schools in the competitive examination. So many rural areas students suffers and inequality prevail amidst slogan of equality and social justice.

Recently Indian parliament passed right to education bill 2009 which envisaged providing all children between ages of 6 to 14 years the right to education. Without imparting quality education, pass certificate will be of no use.  We need to address the problem of quality teacher deficiency and then talk of quality education.

The Arunachal Pradesh state govt decision to recruit J/T and S/T through APPCS is welcome step. In fact, APPCS is also not free from allegation of nepotism and favoritism yet it is more reliable. Many more such move is needed to improve the education scenario of our state.

Time has come for educated people of Arunachal Pradesh to look for change in our attitude and habits. Whole corrupted system prevails largely due to unchanged attitude of our bureaucrats, public leaders and citizens. Age old attitude of narrow clan and ethnic bondage is riding every one of us. Till quality education is imparted to the young blood by valued teachers, hope for change and just society is bleak.

The moral character and academic records of the students must be given weightage during teacher’s recruitment process because teaching is more than a job. Quality education is of distance dream without quality teachers. (The contributor is a student of Rajiv Gandhi University, Department of Political science)

A Tribute to a Teacher: Dr. S Radhakrishnan

GR Biswakarma

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.

That's exactly what a teacher has done for us, September 5th is the birth anniversary of Dr. Radhakrishnan, India’s second President and a literary scholar and life long educator. Today is a special day. Why? It's Teacher's Day. It is the day we celebrate the people who have transformed our lives for the better through the medium of education. Since 1962, we observed September 5th every year as teachers to celebrate the educators in our lives. This day is just a mere reflection of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's love for and attachment to the teaching profession. Teacher's Day in India is a tribute to the hard work that is put by the teacher all year long to educate a child.

Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September, 1888 in Tirutani, a well-known religious center in the Madras. Bright and precocious, with a scholarly disposition and a serene demeanor, from the very beginning, Radhakrishnan spent the first eight years of his life happily and fruitfully in his home town with his parents.  The significant fact that Radhakrishnan's parents, though orthodox, thought it fit to send their beloved son to Christian Missionary schools and colleges: Lutheran Mission School, Tirupathi (1896-1900), Vellore College, Vellore (1900-1904), Madras Christian College (1904-1908). The far-sightedness and broad-mindedness of his revered parents, which enabled them, in those days of blind prejudices and equally blind social taboos, to send their son to well-disciplined Christian educational institutions -held him in good stead throughout, making it possible for him to acquire knowledge. He choose Philosophy as his main or Honours subject in his B.A. degree course and that definitely decided his higher course of studies. He studied Sanskrit and Hindi also and garnered a good deal of interest in the traditional languages of India. He also read the Vedas and the Upanishads with great care and reverence.

For, all throughout his brilliant career, honor after honor was showered on him. The following are some of the main posts held by him most fittingly and efficiently: Lecturer and then Assistant Professor in Philosophy, Presidency College, Madras; Professor of Philosophy, Mysore University (1918-1921); Professor of Philosophy, Calcutta University (1921-1931) and again (1937-1944); Vice-Chancellor of the Andhra University (1931); Spaulding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics, Oxford University (1932-1953) - first Indian to be so appointed; and Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (1942). Among the cultural posts held by him may be mentioned: Leader of the Indian Delegation to UNESCO many times (1946-1950); Chairman of the University Education Commission (1948) appointed by the Government of India; Chairman of the Executive Board of UNESCO (1948); President of UNESCO (1952); Delegate to the P.E.N. Congress (1959); Vice President of International P.E.N.; Honorary Fellow of the British Academy (1962); Representative of the Calcutta University at the Congress of Philosophy, Harvard University, U.S.A. (May 1962). Among the most esteemed political posts held by him some of them are: Ambassador-Extraordinary and Minister-Plenipotentiary to the U.S.S.R. (1949-1952), First Vice-President of India (1952-1956) and Second President of India (1962-1966). He became the Vice-President for the second time from the year 1957-1962. Among the Honorary degrees and distinctions achieved were: Knighthood (1931); Honorary D. Ph. (Teheran University, 1963); Honorary D.Litt. (Tribhuvan University, Nepal, 1963); Honorary Doctor of Law (Pennsylvania University, 1963); Honorary Ph.D. (Moscow University, 1964); Honorary Doctor of Law (National University of Ireland, 1964); over one hundred Honorary degrees including those from Oxford, Cambridge and Rome Universities; Honorary Member of the Order of Merit, Buckingham Palace (12 June, 1963).

Radhakrishnan was, and still is, one of the most celebrated writers of the present generation. His works are many and varied on philosophical, theological, ethical, educational, social and cultural subjects. He contributed also numerous articles to different well-known journals, which too, will prove to be of immense value to generations to come. His first book, 'The Ethics of the Vedanta and Its Material Presupposition', being his thesis for the M.A. degree examination of the Madras University, published in 1908, at the tender age of twenty only, at once established his fame as a great philosophical writer of undoubted ability. All his later works are landmarks in their respective fields, like 'The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore' (1918), 'Idealistic View of Life' (1932), 'Eastern Religions and Western Thought', 'Reign of Philosophy in Contemporary Thought', Kalki or The Future of Civilization', 'Indian Philosophy (2 vols.), etc.

Radhakrishnan is considered as the greatest philosopher of India, and one of the greatest philosophers of the world. In 1952 the Library of Living Philosophers, an institute of world-wide repute, brought out a massive volume on 'The Philosophy of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, devoted wholly to a critical appreciation of his philosophical doctrines. This proves beyond doubt that he is universally considered to be one amongst the most notable of modern philosophical luminaries. Dr. Radhakrishnan is, indeed, a versatile genius - a great scholar, philosopher, seer, writer, orator, political leader, administrator and above all, a great man.
